One of the best ways to contribute to the positive welfare of animals is to buy only from brands that are cruelty free. Changing our consumeristic preferences to eco-friendly, synthetic alternatives puts a halt in the demand for real animal skins. However it isn't always easy or convenient to do so being that many animal friendly brands are independently owned readily available at drug stores.
I have made a list of common cosmetic companies and clothing brands that ARE and AREN'T cruelty free (most of them being luxury brands but in the future I will create a drug-store related post). For full, international, lists please visit PETA's features.peta.org/cruelty-free-company-search/index.aspx
